Rollie O’Malley

Rollie O’Malley

Software Engineer · High School, Class of 2029

I build production AI systems and hardware, and I study what language models are actually doing internally. At 15 I’ve shipped two AI products with real users, completed MIT coursework in machine learning and cognitive robotics, and field-tested an agricultural drone on a tree farm.

About

I’m interested in the gap between what AI systems are instructed to do and what they actually do. That interest started when I built a transformer interpretability visualizer at 13, and it still shapes how I build: I want to understand the systems I ship, not treat them as black boxes.

I was the first freshman ever selected for my school’s varsity robotics team, where I work with upperclassmen on algorithm design, debugging and performance across mechanical, electrical and software systems.

Autonomous Agricultural Hexacopter

2026

Hardware · field-tested on a tree farm

Designed and built a drone that holds two gallon drums and sprays liquid.

  • Designed the power system end to end
  • Built ground-station control in place of a conventional RC link
  • Debugged failures by bisecting the stack
  • Real-world testing on a tree farm
  • Future use: window cleaning for office buildings

AI Receptionist

2025

24/7 automated phone receptionist for businesses

  • Handles inbound phone calls with conversational AI
  • Designed to scale with SMS/email confirmations, Google Calendar scheduling and daily summaries

Built with n8n, Vapi

Research

High vs. Low Volume Resistance Training

June 2025

A 60-day case study on strength, body composition and joint pain in an adolescent male

Designed and ran a 60-day controlled experiment comparing high-volume and low-volume training. Low-volume protocols achieved equal or better outcomes with reduced injury risk.

  • Formulated the hypothesis and controlled for nutrition, sleep and exercise selection
  • Collected daily quantitative data across multiple metrics
  • Identified the limits of bioelectrical impedance measurement and applied statistical corrections
  • Wrote a formal paper covering methodology, results, discussion and practical applications
